For those who used to skate...
or at least tried to, like I did.

Tony Hawk at 48 doing one last 900. Takes a few tries, probably more than shown.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnvPt_a7iOQ

skip to 0:45 for his attempts
1:45 for the completion.

But the context is interesting.

Has been marketed to death but he could and apparently can still can skate. Brings back some memories.

What's the hardest thing about taking up skating?

Telling your parents you're gay.

I was over the Rom when they were there. It would've been 30+ years ago. I remember the deputy head from my school turned up with the PE teachers and rounded up a load of kids from our school.

I escaped into the Chase via the BMX track. I fucking loved that place.

I remember going to watch the Powell-Peralta team skating at Latimer Road when I was a young teen, must have been late 80's.

The half-pipe there was massive and the show was fucking brilliant, even if the local yuffs tried their utmost to spoil it with attempted muggings and snidey attacks on small groups of skaters minding their own business.. Saw us as easy prey and to be fair we probably were just by the fact we were kids!

I blame my lack on of progress (likely excuse) on the fact that it was gravel roads and highways where I lived so I had to get driven into town to a park. I did okay one summer when I stayed with cousins in a small city.

I remember being in my mate Hayden's garage and it was pissing down with rain outside when I first managed an ollie.

Then our competitions turned into how high can you ollie, instead of can you ollie.

Yeah I used to always pick Bucky in Tony Hawks games.

But the first time I ever saw Mullen's kickflip underflip you could have just about convinced me that anything was possible - aliens, walking on water etc.

It took me months to learn how to ollie standing still.

I really liked Bucky Lasek out of that bunch.

Re: For those who used to skate...
Fairly sure I saw Tony Hawk and other legends over the Rom Skate park about 28 years ago, though it could have been Peralta and Cabalero as Hawk would have been fairly young then.

Reckon the local schools must have been bloody empty that day, as there were thousands of 13/14 year old lads there!!

Might have to re-visit Lords of Dogtown again.

Re: For those who used to skate...
Love that!
Tony Hawk should be regarded as a sporting legend, but for some reason skateboarding is regarded as a hobby for kids by most people.
The skill and technique needed to do the most basic tricks is incredible, but to get to his levels is ridiculous and the way he led and developed his sport is second to very few.
And to still be doing stuff like that at 48 is incredible.

Right I'm 44 and off to the local ramp on my H-Street El Gato to see if I've still got it!!!

Re: For those who used to skate...
I was definitely a better Playstation skater than in real life, but I grew up watching Bones Brigade videos and trying (and generally failing) to emulate their tricks. Still have some of those videos at home actually.

Tony Hawk was great to watch, but I was always more into Rodney Mullen and his Ollie's and kick flips.

Don't need to be jealous. Some can, some can't. Just they way the world works.

Re: For those who used to skate...
skating and sports like that were/are exclusively for kids who cant play a proper sport like football/rugby. Weird lot.

Classic and punctually attentive. Though offers little in the way of humour which has become a persistent problem.
